As you know, The Big Lunch has a very simple and unchanging aim – to encourage people to get together with their neighbours on one day a year for a few hours of community, friendship and fun. That “fun” bit is hugely important and is why millions of you take part year after year, but there is also a more serious and long-term intention to The Big Lunch, which, in a nutshell, is about helping to build stronger, safer communities.
That’s why I’m really pleased that Police forces across Wales are supporting The Big Lunch this year, alongside our friends at Neighbourhood & Home Watch, to help and encourage more people to hold Big Lunches in their area and to start making those all-important connections. I was at the Dyfed Powys Police HQ yesterday where I saw the words “crime cannot flourish in a community that cares”. It might sound a bit cheesy but it’s true! 85% of Big Lunchers in 2014 said they felt safer in their neighbourhoods after getting to know their neighbours better at a Big Lunch. Last year, we also shared some great stories about how The Big Lunch and Neighbourhood Watch go hand in hand.
There was a lovely moment at my street’s first ever Big Lunch last year when, mid-way through proceedings, two Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) walked down our street. The instant reaction from most of the neighbours was one of “oh no, what have we done wrong?” but in actual fact, the two young officers were just keen to see what was going on and take the opportunity to introduce themselves. As one of them said “this is 90% of our job done right here. Meeting people, building trust and seeing everyone get along”. I’m glad to say that the two PCSOs stayed for quite some time, chatting with young and old, sharing a cuppa and a slice of cake (of course!) and with a bit more encouragement I think we could have even tempted them to have a go on the bouncy castle!!
Our hope this year is that 10% of the population will have a Big Lunch with their neighbours. That’s a lot of people (6 million ‘ish) and a lot of happier, safer streets and neighbourhoods. So, remember, if you see a police officer wandering near your Big Lunch, don’t hide – say hi and offer them a cuppa. I can guarantee they won’t say no. They might even help you sort out your road closure or put the bunting up!!
Did you know Neighbourhood Watch cover the insurance if you have a NHW Big Lunch street party in England and Wales? More info here.
